Looking for Volunteer Leaders from Hanna - Marnie Pedersen
Looking for volunteer leaders from Hanna - people who are retired, or who work PT - who might be interested in leading Paddle Your Own Canoe working in Hanna. The client self-management program assists people in learning how to live to the best of their ability - given that they may have a chronic illness of some kind. The workshops help the participants to set small short term goals, engage in some problem solving activities, talk about self-management tools, and to talk about strategies to increase participants level of wellness. It is hard to describe, but our post course evaluations have shown that participants really do benefit from the workshop and that these benefits are long lasting. The same program is running in the Calgary Health Region under the name of "Row Your Own Boat." Edmonton and other health regions call the workshop by a different name. The workshops form one arm of our newly developed "Living Well Program."
We are looking for leaders from across the whole of DTHR (David Thompson Health Region) who would have the skills to lead a group of 6-10 participants in a 12 hour program held over a six week period. The leaders are trained, and the material that they present is "canned". The volunteers do not need to have a medical background. The program originated at Stanford University and was written by a gal named Kate Lorig. (She is easy to Google.) This area has seen 2 programs in Drumheller and 2 in Three Hills during the past year. Leaders will be trained during a 4-day session this coming February. Feb 14, 15, 21, 22. The training is in Drumheller.
The leaders are supported by myself during the workshops. I attend the first and the last session - and take care of the details surrounding advertising, registration, materials, and booking rooms etc. The leaders take the Leadership training, and then teach each workshop in pairs. As the training is fairly lengthy, I would ask that anyone who is thinking about becoming a leader would commit to teaching two courses over the next two to three years. I think that asking any more than that is too much.
The volunteers that I inherited from Three Hills and Drumheller state that they have really enjoyed leading the workshops, that it wasn't as hard as they first thought, and that they also benefited from the energy of being part of a group. I know that I have. The groups that I have attended were excellent.
